On most Classic Range Rovers, the Upper Tailgates tend to get into a sorry state. It's among the Range Rover bodywork items made from steel rather than aluminium, and while the frame has only a few rust spots on the outside, it gets very badly corroded on the inside. Not only that, but the bottom horizontal portion of the frame starts to buckle, making it impossible to close the tailgate unless it is slammed hard, or carefully pressed into its catches at both sides.
The Range Rover Top Tailgate has barely changed over the life of the Classic, bar the addition of central locking and an improved bottom rubber seal. It consists of a metal construction, containing the screen, and fitted with a lock assembly, side catches, strut mounts and the lower seal.
To buy from Land Rover they are not cheap retailing in excess of £750.00 plus VAT. Back in 1995, with this in mind we re-designed the tailgate using extruded aluminium and as many bits of the old tailgate as possible - after all, the glass, locks, catches, seal and so on tend to be perfectly serviceable - so why throw them away! This innovative product is hardly distinguishable from the original when fitted and comes in two forms - either as a frame kit, or as an assembled unit with a new heated rear screen ready fitted.

• What you get

The kit is essentially the whole Upper Tailgate less glass and fittings (hinges, strut supports, locking mechanism, handle and bottom seal), plus all the necessary nuts and bolts to do the job. Instructions are included.
Alternatively, you can choose the ready assembled version. You will receive a new heated rear screen ready fitted into the new aluminium tailgate frame. You will still re-use your hinges, strut supports, locking mechanism, handle and bottom seal.
Once you've fitted your new Top Tailgate it will look virtually identical to the original. Unlike the original it won't rust!
